Keys To Success

Math Academy
KEYS TO SUCCESS
Younger students, students who struggle with focus, and those who aren’t always as conscientious as they need to be typically require an adult to sit with them for their first few sessions to help instill the right approach.
Otherwise, these students are prone to rushing through explanatory material and guessing on questions. This inevitably leads to underperformance, frustration, and running in circles.
To improve the odds of success, please reinforce the following 5 habits:
-
Read carefully. Reading to understand is a skill that takes time to develop and is typically the first point of struggle for most students.
-
Follow along with the examples. Examine each step individually, and if necessary, work them out yourself.
-
Don’t do the problems in your head. Most questions require multiple steps and when they do, it’s essential that they be done on paper and in an organized manner.
-
Avoid guessing. If you’re unsure of your answer, rework the problem, or go back and review the preceding explanation to identify what you may have missed or misunderstood.
-
Be consistent. Just like with physical exercise, doing a regular amount every day is the most effective and least painful way to make progress.
Some students may require more guidance and oversight than others, but it pays to spend a little time in the beginning to make sure things are getting off on the right foot.
